I started my bootcamp off with a 5 day water fast. I figured that switching from essentailly 3 meals or eating whatever I want throughout the day to one meal may be hard. But going from no food at all to one meal a day seemed more reasonable.
I started on Super Bowl Sunday – this may have been the biggest mistake. Sitting at the party with lots of dips and drinks, I had just water.
Most People Say..
The first day is that hardest and I did not find this to be true. Despite being at the super bowl party saying no was actually easy. I was really commited to stick to it so I had been filling up on water, and peeing constantly throughout the day.
The first day I didn’t even have a single hunger pain. My body adjusted quickly and well that first day.
Even the second day was actually okay. It wasn’t until day 3 that I started feeling it. I decided to do an early morning Hot Yoga class and it about knocked me out. I actually had to step outside and get my inhaler. My body was low on energy on day 3.
I still did not neccesarily feel hungry until later in day 3 but I was low on energy and not feeling like myself.
Energy for Fitness
So as I mentioned Hot Yoga on the morning of day 3 was tough. The days prior to that I had just speed walked on the treadmill for a long while, about an hour each time. This was not so straining but still got me sweating.
Day 4 I once again decided to just walk on a hill incline on the treadmill. Got a good sweat in but not too strenuous.
Day 5, Thursday morning was the real killer. Again I attempted a Hot Yoga at 6 am. I had so much energy on day 4, I was excited and felt happy and excited. I had felt an almost second wind of sorts.
So waking up Thursday I thought oh yeah, this will be good for me nice and easy.
But was I wrong. I again had a really tough time in class. By the end I actually felt sick and so nauseous.
I do a bible study at a coffee shop 7 am on Thursday’s and always order a cold brew. This morning, I could not even handle a coffee my body was so tired. I was certain I would be sick.
Luckily, I did not get sick and the nausea passed after about an hour.
Needless to say, high cardio workouts while not having any food in my system. Not great for me. Now I know this.
Post 72 Hours
So in fast’s I have done in the past I would not eat for one day, or maybe 3 at most. This is again pretty simple and doesn’t seem to be hard for me.
I was lucky enough to consult with some friends who had fasted before and a friend who is in medical school currently. They had so much great advice and stuff to help encourage me through these 5 days.
My friend Kirby was telling me about my cells and what they begin to do after the 72 hour mark.
Cell Autophagy. Wikipedia says is “the natural, regulated mechanism of the cell that removes unnecessary or dysfunctional components. It allows the orderly degradation and recycling of cellular components. Three forms of autophagy are commonly described: macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy.”
So after 3 days of no food your cells start to clean up inside your body. The good cells will get rid of the bad ones.
I could not tell you if this actually happened, because of course it is not something I can feel. Nor would I know what it felt like to have my cells orderly degrade and recycle.
But I sure did feel light and energized those last two days. After the nausea passed of course.
One thing I can tell you for sure that I felt and noticed was my body odor.
Now I can’t say that I always smell like lavender and roses but I usually do have a fairly faint body odor. Even when I sweat a lot, it’s not too potent.
I actually went to the store to buy different deoderant because I was certain the new organic one I was using was not working. I smelled like onions. Or at least I thought I did.
I pee on these Ketone strips to see if my body is producing low, moderate or high amounts of keytones. During these last two days I was producing lots of keytones and smelling quite funky.
Needless to say, the new deoderant surely didn’t help and now I know that being in ketosis for that long will make me smell a bit more potent and stinky than normal.
Also the taste in my mouth during ketosis is not great. There is never a good work or a way to describe what it tastes like or why but funky is the only word I got for you.
Pro Tip: Bubbly Water
One thing that I did do a lot during this fast was drinkg sparkling water. It often will give you the feeling of being full because the bubbles fill up your tummy
Overall it was a successful fast I would say. I felt great after the 5 days and finally broke my fast with a green smoothie! Something light to put in my stomach after nothing being in there for 5 whole days.
